Successful Addiction Intervention for Sober Recovery
Contrary to what many people think, hitting bottom is not a prerequisite for recovery from alcoholism and addiction. Along the same lines, there still exists a widely held misconception that claims the addicted individual must enter drug and alcohol rehab of his or her own volition. The fact is, the alcoholic or addict who enters a treatment program half-heartedly, or even begrudgingly, is far better off than the person with an addiction who does not enter a drug and alcohol program at all.
Addiction is a progressive and potentially fatal illness, and addiction intervention is often the first step on the road to recovery. Intervention can be the start of the healing process, not only for the alcoholic or addict, but also for the participating family members and friends. When conducted correctly, and done with understanding and compassion, addiction intervention means more than helping the addicted person to achieve sobriety: it honors everything that you love in that person (while also saying no to the disease). Additionally, intervention honors the best - the qualities you appreciate and value most - in the other people involved, as well as in you. Addiction intervention pays homage to the highest self in each person present, and is truly an expression of love.
Intervention works best when it is a well-organized and planned event. When conducted effectively by a professional interventionist, it can commence the process of healing for everyone involved. There is no shortage of interventionists, so remember to interview several before you make your final choice. Take into consideration the person’s training and experience, as well as his or her philosophy and approach. Keep in mind that a punitive and shaming approach not only doesn’t work, but can do more harm than good. It is essential that the interventionist has a solid understanding of addiction and feels compassion for the addict. Finally, consider asking the interventionist what intervention model is used: Arise Invitational, Johnson, or Systemic. It is helpful to know how these models differ in their philosophies and approaches, and which one is best suited for your loved one.
Whether or not the addicted individual agrees to the terms of the intervention, agrees or disagrees to enter a treatment program, there is no such thing as a failed addiction intervention. Any genuine attempt to disrupt the destructive and progressive cycle of addiction is in itself a positive step. Friends and family members have made a move towards reclaiming their power. They have made a conscious choice to no longer participate in the dysfunction and pain that accompanies alcohol and drug addiction, and to stand instead on the side of wellness and love. For the loved-one with an addiction, an intervention can plant the seeds of change that will eventually bloom into a full recovery.
